Dear Dr Panigrahi,

Re: Your Claim for Compensation

We refer to the email dated 5 May 2022.

Whilst your complaint alludes to you seeking to make a claim for compensation against the

Chief Constable, it does not amount to a letter of claim that is compliant with Civil Procedure

Rules.

You may be aware that there is no pre-action protocol for civil claims against the police.

However, in order to comply with the overriding objective in civil proceedings parties to

potential claims are encouraged to comply, so far as is possible, with the general principles

of pre-action conduct.

Claimants are therefore required to provide a clear summary of the facts on which the claim

is based in order that a proper investigation can be conducted. We would therefore be

grateful if you could please set out the nature of your claim restricted to matters directly

relevant to those which you would wish the Chief Constable to respond to by way of a civil

claim. Furthermore, please identify the incident date, any officers involved, and the amount

of compensation you are seeking.

Once in receipt of your particularised and signed letter of claim we are required to

acknowledge this within 21 days and to provide a response as to liability within 3 months

thereafter.

Yours sincerely,

Legal Services

Legal Services Department
